I paid a visit to Art Sydney 09 last weekend after winning some tickets from the lovely guys at Urban Uprising. Normally, I find art shows almost as inspiring as a Westfield food court, but I must admit there was some great finds on display this year.
Arcade Art & Editions was one such find. This online gallery mainly represents contemporary, emerging artists mainly from Latin America. Artists like Javier Gutierrez, who lives and works in Mexico City, are what Arcade is all about. Fresh. Spirited. And accessible.
You can’t help but wonder whether this is how all galleries will eventually head. No pesky rental fees. No worrying about having to schlep around to cities, spend hours installing your work, making holes in walls, and then finding out it you just can’t t fit it all in. Just great art, accessible to all. Physical galleries will always have a place, no doubt, but in our increasingly fragmented world, surely there is room for more of this.
