Power Places was created in 1980-84 by environmental photographer John Pfahl. According to Pfahl, he wanted to document the irony of power companies situating their plants in the most picturesque parts of the country (presumably because they need to be near rivers, lakes, waterfalls, etc to get their stations to work).
Now I’m no hardcore environmentalist, but I do understand the importance of protecting and preserving nature. Which is why I’m the first to admit to feeling guilty when looking at these images. Man’s domination over the environment, so spectacularly captured by Pfahl, doesn’t evoke tragedy or dismay within me, rather awe and wonder, even – dare I say it – pride. Oh, the conflict!
