One of the best things about Tokyo architecture is the city’s ability to continually reinvent itself. In part this is due to earthquakes which mean not a lot in this town is permanent. But it is also to do with the quintessentially Japanese obsession with the new.
Flamme d’Or is the headquarters of Asahi beer. Designed by Phillippe Starck and completed in 1989, the building is nicknamed ‘kin no unchi’ (literally, ‘the golden turd’) for the 360-tonne flame perched precariously on top of the building. According to Starck, the turd is a stylized version of a frothy head of beer, sitting on the main building which represents a beer mug.
