When you think of dying careers, taxidermy has got to be up there at the top of the list. Louise Weaver has managed to resurrect this peculiar yet strangely beautiful craft for an entirely new purpose.
Taxidermied peacocks are given garish new crocheted plumes, a ridiculous-looking ‘improvement’ of their former splendor. In another piece entitled Sparkling Antler, a pair of antlers is transformed into a piece of coral. All pieces comment on the irony of preserving things. Weaver’s work speaks of appropriation, costume and drama, and are almost comic in their appeal.
Weaver is represented by Darren Knight Gallery in Waterloo, Sydney.
