The Fauvist period of art was like a firey relationship – lots of fun but way too short. It lasted for only three years, from 1905 to 1907, where Matisse and Derain pioneered the simplification and abstraction of the preceding impressionist style. I’ve long been an admirer of Jasper Knight’s use of primary acrylic colours in large-format works, and have even tried to imitate them myself (with results that are consistent if only in their mediocrity).
So, when visiting Melbourne on the weekend, I was delighted to wander past his latest exhibition at Armadale’s Metro Gallery. When entering [...]

Nanami Cowdroy has a wonderful Japanese-European name, and this cross-cultural heritage is also reflected in her ink-based illustrations on paper.
Cowdroy’s art has the flavour of yakuza (Japanese gang) or polynesian tattoos, with its organic shapes, use of negative space and painstaking detail. Yet the themes are very contemporary, including urban decay, graffitti and environmental issues.
