I think it’s time to apologise for an increasingly monochromatic blog. I’m sorry. But in a city as frenetic as Tokyo, where inhabitants face visual assault from the moment they leave their home to the moment they return, monochrome is exactly what is needed.
Sway House, in the Setagaya neighbourhood, is a fine example. Designed by Atelier Bow-Wow (Without doubt the coolest name of any architect) the building stands at an unconventional, slightly unnerving angle, as if it is suspended in the middle of an earthquake, or at least a strong wind, lending a sense of fragility to the building. Inside, a zen-like calm is induced by the simple timber flooring and stark white walls. The rooftop provides further respite from the madness.
