Children’s portraiture is a popular genre, if not a little boring. When looking at yet another photo of yet another smiling cherub, I need to stop myself from saying out loud, ‘yes, you’re cute, but you look like every other one of the 239,785 white kids currently posing somewhere around the world’.
Winkler + Noah take the genre to an entirely new place. Inspired by taking standard portraits of their doll-like granddaughter, Beatrice, the Italian duo decided to start a photographic series that comments on how the media is so easily able to manipulate children, almost like puppets. These are hauntingly beautiful images that neatly combine the innocence of childhood with the sinister of Chucky. Very nice.
